STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island Republican Assemblymembers Nicole Malliotakis and Michael Reilly have introduced legislation with the state’s minority conference that would give county leaders more control over state-of-emergency declarations in their home counties, limiting the governor’s powers.

During the coronavirus outbreak, Gov. Andrew Cuomo used the expanded legal authority of the state of emergency to issue the shutdown mandates that brought the state to a halt, and has most recently outlined stringent guidelines that the state’s economic regions must meet before they can start to reopen.
