A BROKEN PROPERTY TAX SYSTEM

.

Right now, single-family homeowners in areas like Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn are paying more in property taxes than co-op and condo owners in Manhattan and the owners of million-dollar brownstones in Park Slope.

That’s just wrong. And it’s pricing seniors and hardworking homeowners out of New York City.

De Blasio and scores of other homeowners in tony neighborhoods have been profiting off a quirk in the property tax system where the assessed values of one-to two-family homes like the mayor’s can’t increase more than 6% every year or 20% over five years.

As a Member of the State Assembly and a candidate for Mayor, I’ve called for the City to fix this inequitable system. While I’m pleased that the new Advisory Commission on Property Tax Reform is confronting these problems head on, we must keep fighting to make sure our voices are heard.

Please sign my petition calling on New York City to reform the broken property tax system that is discriminating against single-family homeowners in Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn. Together, we can fix this!
